Drunk Clinic Owner, Nephew Attempt YouTube-Guided Surgery in UP; Woman Dies

A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district died after an illegal clinic owner and his nephew allegedly performed a surgery on her by following a YouTube video. Police say the intoxicated operator carried out the procedure without authorisation, prompting an investigation into the region’s unregulated medical practices.

A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district died after the owner of an unauthorised clinic and his nephew allegedly attempted to perform a surgical procedure on her by following a YouTube tutorial, according to police. The shocking incident has raised serious concerns about illegal medical practices and the ease with which untrained individuals attempt dangerous procedures under the guise of healthcare.

Police said Munishra Rawat, the wife of Tehbahadur Rawat, had been suffering from abdominal pain believed to be related to a kidney stone. On December 5, her husband took her to Shri Damodar Aushdhalaya in Kothi, where clinic operator Gyan Prakash Mishra reportedly diagnosed her with a stone ailment and advised immediate surgery. Mishra allegedly quoted a cost of ₹25,000 for the operation, prompting the husband to deposit ₹20,000 in advance.

In his complaint, Tehbahadur Rawat stated that Mishra appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the procedure and began operating after watching an online video. Mishra, assisted by his nephew, allegedly made a deep incision on the woman’s abdomen, cutting multiple veins in the process. Munishra’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she died the following evening on December 6.

Authorities have said the clinic had no valid authorisation to operate and that both individuals involved in the botched procedure are under investigation. The case has intensified scrutiny of unlicensed medical establishments in the region, where unregulated practitioners continue to pose a significant risk to public health.

The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement against illegal clinics and greater public awareness about the dangers of seeking treatment from unqualified individuals, especially as such operations can lead to irreversible harm or loss of life.
